The sense of "Check" in English "I want to check the dictionary" is somewhat idiomatic. The translator results don't know that. You're not looking up the word to compare it to anything or verify it against something you know.

"Quiero buscar una palabra en el diccionario." captures it better. You're searching for the word in the dictionary and we understand the purpose now, right? Your sentence might begin, "consulta el diccionario..."

If you check the word check in the dictionary at the top of this page, it will give you options with contexts.

From our dictionary: To check something against something -> cotejar o chequear algo con algo - Sabor, Jan 15, 2011
yes thanks, I saw that, but {cotejar} as i check WordReference is more like {compare} , so i think it doesn't fit - orznge, Jan 15, 2011
