I don't know where the word "balatas" is used; I had never heard it before. On my side of the world, brake pads are "pastillas de freno", and brake linings (for drum brakes) are zapatas or zapatillas de frenos.

Algunos otros diccionarios dicen que balata significa 'brake lining' en inglés - como no sé casi nada acerca de las mecánicas de autos, no me importa demasiado.

Some other dictionaries say that balata means brake linings in English - as I know almost nothing about car mechanics, it doesn't bother me too much.
