Estimado o querido

Question

I am currently corresponding with a priest in Mexico. We have now written to each other three times, each time using estimado. The correspondence is semi-business but also a discussion of spiritual matters. Should the switch from estimado to querido, if it happens, originate with him? He and I are both older men, i am senior. Would really appreciate hearing back on this as I would not want him to take offense, although I doubt that he would. Oh yes, we have never met face to face. Gracias.

If he changes to "querido" then you should do the same, but until then, I would continue using "estimado." Because of his position, I would let him iniciate the change even though you are senior .
