Do you have to add these before a word even if its just a word like closet, not the closet?

Correct. Always.

Don't forget the plurals for each: los and las

El clóset. Los clósets.

La playa. Las playas.

HI king, well, that depends ...

You would for example say:

I am a teacher. but in Spanish: Soy profesor.

So here you say the article in English and not in Spanish.

I like apples. but in Spanish: Me gustan las manzanas.

so in English you don't use the article and in Spanish you dowink

Its not really in a sentence form. Its translation of spanish words for a test.

Under the More tab at the top of the page is Reference. Choose that and you'll find a lot of information about all kinds of things. Click on Spanish Grammar and then Definite Article. It explains the whole thing about el and la.
