The word of the day can be confusing, as there are often so many non related meanings for some words. Like today's:

(noun) joker, wild card; catch-all, all purpose word, useful pretext; useful gadget.

Like what does a joker have do do with the remaining meanings?

I back translated joker, and comodin comes up, but only refers to a joker, like in a card deck.

Look up useful gadget, and you do not get el comodin. Look up useful pretext, and you do not get el comodin. Look up useful pretext, and you do not get el comodin. Look up all purpose word, and you do not get el comodin. Look up wild card, and el comodin comes up. Look up joker, and you get bromista, and el comodin comes up, just as reference to cards.

It is more like a "comfortabler", I guess because your hand is quite "comfortable" in terms of combinations (wild guess).

This is called a 'soother' here. You can use comodín for a wild card - for example the person in the tennis match that gets to play although they weren't qualified? (That's a question).
