"Gringo" What does it really mean?

The name “Gringo” has been thrown around a lot on this forum lately. I’m sure, as most North Americans do, have an idea of what it means. I’m curious as to what it implies, or mean, to our native Spanish friends in this forum. I would love to hear from all of you if you’re so inclined. In our most excellent dictionary, “Gringo” could have an offensive meaning to some. (Not me. I really don’t care what people call me) I also would like to know if there is a Spanish equivalent. I’m asking this question not to create ill feelings, but to be just a little more informed about the nature of this beast. Thank you
