If I go to Mexico for a year, should I speak fluent Spanish or should I just know the basics?

You could just know the basics and they would teach you. You would learn a lot from native speakers! Good luck!

If you go to Mexico for a year, you will know a lot more Spanish than when you started, irrespective of how much you know now.
