The same way you use it in English.
"It would have been better If I had told you". = "Habría sido mejor si me hubieras dicho".
Hubiera is the subjunctive form of the pluscuamperfecto del indicativo. Habría is the conditional form of haber.
Another example: "Si me hubieras dado el dinero, habría pagado la billeta". If you had given me the money, I would have paid the bill.
This friend of mine is already fluent in Spanish so she is obviously asking how she should use the verb in English. I know since I recommonded this website to her ![]()
Please remember to read people's profiles and not to assume what they are asking![]()
Example: Father speaking to his children:
1 "It would have been very helpful to your mother if you had tidied up your bedrooms as you were asked!"
Headteacher talking at the staff meeting:
2 "The school picnic could have been such a wonderful success if it hadn't rained all day"
3 Mother anxiously talking to her 11 year old child:
"Where have you been all this time? ...I was worried sick about you!"
Child replies: "I have been playing out in the street"
Mother, angrily You should have asked me first!
Child;" I would have done if I had had time"
4 It had been a tiring exercise learning all about the subjunctive mood in English and now Maria just wanted to sleep
I hope this helps you :-)
It would have been better if I had told you.
It would have - habría (conditional - from the verb "haber")
been - sido (from "ser")
better - mejor
if - si
I had - hubiera (from "haber" .... imperfect subjunctive - similar to English. "I had" is the same as "I were to have", right?)
told - dicho (from "decir")
you - te
it - lo (the "thing" that I should have told you)
Habría sido mejor si te lo hubiera dicho.
