Do they mean exactly the same, or is there a difference? Is one more commonly used than the other? I'm just curious, thanks.

Interesting question!!! I I don't want to sound like a writter or poet but yes!! in the Spanish language these two words don't have the exact same meaning. The impact of these words is quite different. "Te Quiero"= To Care about someone. Although it implies some dose of love, it can be restricted and limited. You can say "te quiero" to your family members, your friends, neighbors, pets, co-workers, etc. "Te Amo"= To Love someone. Saying "Te amo" means not only caring but loving without boundaries, a true sentiment.. You only say "te amo" to your husband/wife, sons or parents..or those who mean something bigger in your life.

Te quiero - I want you (could mean a range of things, depending on context).

Te amo - I love you (romantic way).
