with two teeny changes - 'como tal' - translates as 'as such'? just another idea....

Perhaps "¿Qué tal?" = "What's going on?" or "What's happening" (as a greeting or conversation starter).

Hola, are you referring to "qué tal", an expression that can be loosely translated to "how's it going"?
