I'm afraid that's the English pronunciation, not the Spanish. - Deanski, Aug 26, 2011

You are confusing the pronunciation of the letter with the name of the letter. a recent statement from the R A E sanctions (gives official approval to) the name being "uve doble". Its pronunciation is an entirely different matter. Since "w" does to occur in any native Spanish words, it pronunciation depends, to some extent, on the speaker (and especially on the speaker's familiarity with its pronunciation in other languages).

The Spanish languarge station I listen to in Arizona (1190 AM) always uses "doble-oo" (I hear it all the time when they are giving out a web address) but when I was in Spanish class in school I was taught "doble-bay", which I think is standard or Peninsular Spanish. The RAE says "uve doble" and that probably the official correct way to say it, but I have never heard this in spoken Spanish.

When we speak of ''W" it is usually applies to words assimilated into the language. The ''W'' page in the dictionary is just that, one page, and all are assimilated words. we refer to ''W'" as doble U
