abbreviations in spanish

The other day the "Word of the Day" was "el Peste." One of the examples given mentioned "Crystal Meth," while the spanish sentence spelled "metanfetamin de cristal." Is it inappropriate to abbreviate words in spanish the way we do in english?

That's an interesting question, I wonder if it depends on each instance (word). I know that Crystal Meth is referred to as 'cristal'.
