thermocouple is a sensor comprised of two separate metals joined at the sensing tip. A temperature change causes an EMF to be generated that can be read my an instrument designed to read the changes in EMF resulting in a temperature readout.

Im México we use "thermopile"' or"' thermopar'' for this sensor. I have heard both terms used.

Yes, gas furnaces are a very common place to find them. It measures the flame temperature to make sure the pilot light is lit before turning on the gas to the burner. Same thing in gas ovens and hot water heaters. - KevinB, Jan 1, 2011

Uh oh. I see the debate renewing about whether lit (past participle) can be used as an adjective or whether it should be lighted. - 0074b507, Jan 1, 2011
