acompañarlos o acompañaros?

Ahora mismo les traigo los abrigos.Pero tienen que perdonarme, porque luego tengo que meterme en la cocina y no voy a poder acompañarlos.

I don´t understand why it´s acompañarlos but not acompañaros????

Can I say acompañaros instead of acompañarlos?

I'll be brave and say that I believe acompañarles is leísmo. ?

I think acompañar requires the Direct Object Pronoun (lo/la/los/las) whereas

traer requires the Indirect Object Pronoun (le/les) if something (the Direct Object) is being brought to a person or people.

(Acompañar would not require the Direct Object Pronoun if the actual noun were used. ie Voy a acompañar a Robert y Teresa.)

Good question, I'm watching to see if anyone confirms or denies my assumptions.

Because the speaker os on formal and not on familiar terms with the other persons, as indicated by the preceding sentences:

• ... les traigo ... instead of os traigo
• Pero tienen que ... instead of Pero tenéis que ...

I would also phrase it acompañarles instead of los , but I think that varies with different varieties of Spanish.

Añadidura: galsally is right in stating that using "les" here is a case of leísmo. I learned an eternity ago that it's ok as long as le or les references male person(s). I forgot about the male requirement of that rule when I wrote the answer above and had in mind that it's ok to use le/les as long as persons are referenced.

... y se considera aceptable la forma leísta exclusivamente cuando el complemento directo de la acción es una persona de sexo masculino.

Both are correct:

• Acompañarlos a ustedes (Latin America)
• Acompañaros a vosotros (Spain)

Also, because "acompañarlos" can also mean "acompañarlos a ellos", some people say:

• Acompañarles a ustedes (less common in South America)

in order to avoid the potential confusion. Although it is technically a "leísmo", it is not considered incorrect, since its use is widespread even among well educated speakers.

P.D. If your book has written "acompañárlos", they have made a mistake. There is no accent there, as the stress is on the penultimate syllable and it ends in s.
