"I want to learn Spanish"
The 'about me' section of my profile simply states, "I want to learn Spanish". But the hardest part about learning a new language is I don't often get a chance to actually use it. So I would like to use Spanish on this site as much as possible, starting with my profile.
Is "quiero aprendo español" a correct translation for this sentence? If not, what did I do wrong and how should I say it instead?

Querer is a great verb because you only have to conjugate it and then you can follow it by a verb in it's infinitive form - very handy!
Quiero aprender español ..... I want to learn Spanish. ![]()
Quiero ir .... I want to go
Queremos comer ..... We want to eat
¿Quieres venir? ..... Do you want to come?
etc etc
It would be better for you to start with the lessons in this site but I'll tell you what I know any way. Spanish verbs are conjugated depending on the endings they have which can be either ar, er or ir. If there are two verbs in the sentence then the first verb gets conjugated and the second one remains in its infinitive form just as Kiwi girl mentioned above. Conjugations are as follows;
|
|
|
-ar |
-er |
-ir |
|
Yo |
I |
-o |
-o |
-o |
|
Tu |
You |
-as |
-es |
-es |
|
El/Ella/Usted |
He/She/ You formal |
-a |
-e |
-e |
|
Nosotros |
We |
-amos |
-emos |
-imos |
|
Vosotros |
You plural |
-ais |
-eis |
-is |
|
Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes |
They/They/You plural formal |
-an |
-en |
-en |
For example;
|
-ar |
-er |
-ir |
|
Hablar (to speak) |
aprender (to learn) |
Vivir (to live) |
|
hablo |
aprendo |
vivo |
|
hablas |
aprendes |
vives |
|
habla |
aprende |
vive |
|
hablamos |
aprendemos |
vivimos |
|
hablais |
aprendéis |
vivis |
|
hablan |
aprenden |
viven |
According to what we have above;
"Hablo español" would be "I speak spanish" , "Vivo en España" would be "I live in spain" , "Quiero hablar español" would be "I want to speak spanish".
I hope this is enough to get you started ![]()
