Direct object... again :)un día llamó a su cocinero jefe y le dijo.

Hello everyone. I had this sentence out of a short story: Harto ya de tiernos faisanes y pescados raros, un día llamó a su cocinero jefe y le dijo.

The "a" is unnecessary, isn't it? Assuming that it's a direct object... I guess if it were indirect object they had to put "le" before the "llamó", right?
