Favourite philosophical quotes
I was going to add this to the Favourite sayings post but reasoned that it probably doesn't qualify as a saying...
"...there is no reason for you to think that any man has lived long because he has grey hairs or wrinkles; he has not lived longhe has existed long. For what if you should think that that man had had a long voyage who had been caught by a fierce storm as soon as he left harbour, and, swept hither and thither by a succession of winds that raged from different quarters, had been driven in a circle around the same course? Not much voyaging did he have, but much tossing about."
I find this quite poignant and will work on a translation.
It is from Seneca's On the Shortness of Life

I like Albert Einstein's comment:
"My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble mind."
Convictions are more dangerous enemies of truth than lies.
Friedrich Nietzsche
The more we know the more we know we don't know.
Is the Spanish any good?
"Cuanto más sabemos, más nos damos cuenta que nada sabemos"
'The more we know, the more we realize we know nothing'
Will I ever get the "hang" of Spanish?
I still prefer the English sentence structure above though - the Spanish one is self-contradictory.
'Every problem in life that may be encountered contains the seeds of its own solution'
Life isn't a race: the person who finishes first doesn't win.
Everything in society tells us to distrust others. I think its the other way around. We need to profoundly trust in those around us, in their potential and in who they are.

Another couple of 'Einstein' ones
We should take care not to make the intellect our god; it has, of course, powerful muscles, but no personality.
The world is a dangerous place to live - not because of the people who are evil but because of the people who don't do anything about it.
And a real classic if you have ever pondered the theory of relativity:
When you sit with a nice girl for two hours, you think it's only a minute. But when you sit on a hot stove for a minute, you think it's two hours. That's relativity.
Walk your Talk.
As a beautiful flower without fragrance is disappointing,
so are wise words without right action.
As a beautiful flower with a delightful fragrance is pleasing.
So is wise and lovely speech when matched with right action.
Sakya muni Buddha.
"Excuse me while I kiss the sky" by James Marshall Hendrix
Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity
(not so deep but really funny)
One I find useful to remember is "Evil often evil mars." It's a comment made by Gandalf in the The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien. Whenever someone is up to something devious at work I remember that quote so I don't worry about things too much. The person who is up to no good usually ends up hurting himself.
The race does not always go to the swift but to those who keep on running.
"Only a fool wins an argument"
and
"No one wins a war"
