A roll of film

Question

I'm trying to discuss a "roll of film" that I discovered in an old camera. For the word "film", SpanishDict suggets "un rollo or carrete (for camera)". If I just say "rollo" or "carrete", will the listener understand? For instance if I say, "Encontre un rollo en una vieja camara," will that make sense? In English you might reference a "roll of film" and then continue discussing the actual "film". Unfortunately, when I look up "film" I am usually given a translation of "pelicula", which I'm sure is incorrect.

If all I have to say is "rollo" or "carrete", which is more used in Puerto Rico?

There is nothing wrong with saying Rollo de película; film is film, big silver screen of small camera. If you´re in a camara store, you could say simply Un rollo and it would most likely be understood.

Well, I don't know about Puerto Rico specifically, but you should be able to use any of those. Normally you would say 'un rollo de película' if you want to be perfectly clear the first time you mention it, although 'película', 'rollo' or 'carrete' would work perfectly fine from there on (eg: 'Voy a ponerle a la cámara una película ISO 200)

"rollo" by itself can carry the meaning of "mess"; for example, "qué rollo"!

"carrete" means any sort of spool, such as a "carrete de hilo".

"película" by itself refers to any sort of film, such as "película de plástico"

To be clear, you should go with the entire phrase "rollo de película" or "carrete de película". Once you have established your topic, you can abbreviate.
