You can also use the "a cántaros" expression along with other verbs (aside from "llover") "to mean abundantly and with much force."

For example

La lluvia caía a cántaros ? The rain fell (was falling) in buckets/It was raining cats and dogs/the rain was pouring down/it was coming down in sheets
