Sin embargo, yo intento evitarlos cuando posible.

However, I try to avoid them when possible.

If the two things I mentioned before were feminine nouns, should I turn los to las, making it evitarlas?

Yes, it should be "las" then. Consider these two examples:

  • Plagas y enfermedades: ¿cómo evitarlas?
  • Accidentes laborales y sugerencias para evitarlos

Really the thing is What are you taking about? is it about problems? then is "los" it's about women is "las", I mean it depends on the gender of the phrase, so yes if the two things are femenine, you should use las
