It depends (I love saying that). If you include the word 'written', then it sounds like in English, and you use 'por'. However, If you don't include the word 'written' in Spanish, then you need to use 'de'. In other words, unless you use the word 'written', in Spanish we are used to saying that a certain book is Shakespeare's, rather than 'by Shakespeare'.

Eg: 'Ayer acabé de leer 'Guerra y Paz', escrita por León Tolstói'

or 'Ayer acabé de leer 'Guerra y Paz', de León Tolstói'

If you change the word 'written' to 'directed' or 'composed', this applies to titles of songs, albums, films, etc.. by the way.

Eg: 'Me gusta 'Espacio 2001', dirigida por Stanley Kubrick

'Me gusta 'Espacio 2001' de Stanley Kubrick

We encourage people here to make an initial attempt to post their own answer and then people will be plesaed to offer corrections, guidance and advice

So I should not give you the answer but I can give you a clue wink grin

It is the same three letter word that is used when you want to say

He walked 'through' the park The word also means by

El libro fue escrito (_ _ _ ) Juan Carlos Alvarez (I think this is a made-up author)

I hope this helpsgrin
