This sounds like something unique to your class. I've never heard of "steps" for any verbs.

1 Yo. Nosotros.
2 Tu. Vosotros.
3 El/ella. Usted. Ustedes. and those are the 3 personal pronouns singular and plural and as you can see the third one has multiple pronouns and you can equate usted/ustedes to the sir form of address in English. Of course this applies to all verbs and not just Ir.
