They both just mean outside right? En las afueras also means outside doesn't it? Gracias.

Afueras is the prefable word for an area surronding or outside a major town.

Vivía en las afueras de Manchester. I used to live in the outskirts of Manchester or more preciseley the outlying districts. Me voy fuera. I am going outside.
