How do you say "he was only trying to protect her" in Spanish? Do you use double object pronouns?

The two that come to mind are "Solo estaba tratando de protegerla" and "Solo intentaba protegerla. Why would you use double object pronouns? Of course I could be wrong, my usual disclaimer.

Also, (just to confuse things) it could be "solo trataba de protegerla," I guess. And I usually use a similar disclaimer. - webdunce, Dec 19, 2010

No. In almost all circumstances, you would not write "he," which is the subject pronoun of "was trying". Her is the object of "to protect."

Solo intentaba protegerla.

If, for some reason you were going to write he (which you probably shouldn't here), it would be...

Él solo intentaba protegerla.
