Estar is an irregular verb in the preterit that does no follow the normal ending structure (í, iste, ió, imos, ieron). It is instead conjugated as estuve, estuviste, estuvo, estuvimos, estuvieron.

Hope this helps

Careful. Although "estar" does indeed follow an irregular pattern in the preterit (as well as for many other tenses), it is of the first conjugation (-ar verbs), and the appropriate regular endings for an -ar verb would be: é, aste, ó, amos, asteis, aron
