The verb TO BE equals in Spanish two verbs : SER and ESTAR.

Claro que hay una diferencia entre los dos:

La pregunta "como es la fiesta" pide una descripcion de la fiesta

"como esta la fiesta" tiene mas que ver con si te gusta o no.

Como esta la comida vs como es la comida --

How was the party? You can say como estuvo tu fiesta? como means how and there are two verbs that mean TO BE! SER AND ESTAR and when you say How, you have to use the verb that call ESTAR! And also you can understand better with the lesson "Ser vs ESTAR.

There are two verbs meaning 'to be' in Spanish but it is Ser you need not estar in the example you gave us
