Beginner Spanish - The Present Tense, Regular -ar verb practice

Question

Ok here's one for the beginners who are starting to conjugate verbs - below is a short explanation to help you get started 'conjugating' regular -ar verbs into the present tense and after that you will find a quiz for a bit of practice

The present tense in Spanish can mean three things.

The Spanish phrase "yo hablo" can mean:

I speak, ?> I am speaking, ?> I do speak

Many Spanish verbs are completely regular, meaning that they follow a specific pattern of conjugation.

Spanish infinitives are divided into two parts: the ending and the stem. The ending is the last two letters. Remember, all infinitives end in -ar, -er, or -ir. The stem is everything that's left after you remove the ending.

habl + ar = hablar - to speak

com + er = comer - to eat

viv + ir = vivir - to live

To conjugate regular -ar verbs, simply drop the ending (-ar) and add the following endings to the stem:

For Yo/I add an - 'o' to the stem

eg habl+o

For Tú/You (familiar) add – 'as' to the stem

eg habl+as

For Usted (You), Él (He) , Ella (She) add -?'a' to the stem

eg habl+a

For Nosotros/We add – 'amos' to the stem

eg. habl+amos

For Ustedes (You plural), Ellos & Ellas (them) add -?'an' to the stem

eg. habl+an

This is called 'conjugating a verb

Good try, one that caught you out a couple of times was if you say, so and so and I, you were quite right that you would need a plural form of the verb but if it involves 'I' then you would us the nosotros/we form rather than the ellos/they form :) - Kiwi-Girl, Dec 17, 2010
