¿Cómo traducir "Monkey off you back"?

I am translating a document from English to Spanish with the idiom "keep monkeys off your back". Does anyone have any creative ideas to help me translate this phrase into Spanish? I know that it means something like "keep troubles off you" or something like that, but I am not even completely sure of the meaning in English.

In general, having a monkey on your back refers to having a big and persistant problem. For example, if someone has a drug problem they are said to have a monkey on their back. In the same way, if you have a large mortgage payment every month and it's all you can do to barely keep up with it, you'd have a monkey on your back.

...but it is as if you have allowed a monkey to be transferred to you.
