What's the meaning behind "Como agua para chocolate"?

I remember a lot of discussion about this when the movie, "Like water for chocolate" was popular in the US. I heard at least half a dozen different explanations. Like with any literary phrase, the original meaning was in the mind of the author, and the meaning for you would come from your own understanding of the work.
