Beer in hand, talking to native speakers who know no English.
Yes, I have to agree with the principle proposed by HotChick: whatever works for you (personally) is usually the best way !
Learning style is very much a matter of personal preference and so requires an individual approach because what works for one person may often not help another to the same extent or in some cases at all !.
Having said that I would say that nothing beats or comes close to beatiing the opportunity to practise, in this case, Spanish or any other language, with other native speakers in their own counntry eg Spain, Central or South America. At some time in the learning process, preferably sooner rather than later, you will need to apply your learning in the real world outside the rather formal and artificial world of the classroom.so the more opportunities you take to practise it the better!
All of the following methods can help in addition to practising your Spanish with native speakers:
1 Living in a Spanish speaking country and practising Spanish regularly with native speakers in their own country eg Spain etc...
2 Participating in regular Skype chat with native speakers eg at Spanish Dict
3 Receiving regular private lessons (1:1 ) from a native speaker in your own country eg once a week ora s often as possible
4 Participating in regular chat with fluent and advanced non-native speakers
5 Taking advantage of free online Spanish lessons from 1 Native or 2 Non-native teachers eg The free lessons that Paralee Whitmire offers here atSpanish Dict
6 Flash cards
7 Reading Spanish books and newspapers, watching tv and listening to Spanish radio, listening to Spanish music on CD's, online music ie through Utube etc...
8 Participating in Spanish forums and observing the way that native speakers write Spanish correctly eg: Heidi, Lazarus, Gekkosan, Cogumela, Billstor, Guillermo, and Carlos etc
Just a word of caution with flashcards: they are not guaranteed 100% accurate here as they have not all been created by fluent/ native speakers so if you are not sure if something sounds right /is correct you can always post a question in the question section if it is a phrase or look up individual words in a personal Spanish Dictionary or one on--line!
These will hopefully give you a starting point and a good idea ![]()
Practice via discussions with those more fluent.
There are many ways to study but it depends on what works for you. For me, I use my Spanish text "Dicho y Hecho"....I go through each section of every chapter, doing all the exercises. Then I try to find as many online exercises on that section and I try to get them done too. That way, by the time I am done with a section, I know it by heart. You also get to practice your vocabulary this way. When I want to learn vocabulary, I write it over and over till it sticks in my head. And for the hard ones I write them out on a sticky on a spot where I look often (my white board) so that every time I look at it I can revise it.
While Lorenzo's beer-in-hand-and-chatting method is my favorite, and probably the best, I also read books and newspapers, listen to podcasts and radio programs, and watch TV shows and DVD's in Spanish.
Anything you can do to actually use the language rather than memorizing vocabulary lists and doing conjugation drills will be a big advantage.
Practice---it doesn't matter how, it's simply to practice....books, audio, speaking, writing, reading...all things...flashcards, nametags, etc. Good luck and watch the videos here on SD!!! ![]()
