Would it be okay to write at the top of a card: La familia (surname)?

Since you are addressing a card TO the family; you can omit the article "La".
It's pretty much as in English; you would start a letter like this:
"JOHNSON FAMILY:"
not
"THE JOHNSON FAMILIY:"
in Spanish it would be:
"FAMILIA JOHNSON"
