I find the "Aula" series by Difusion very útil y interesante. There're two editions: latina and the ordinary one. I think that generally the publisher is highly recomendable.

How about Gente de difusión? I used and finished all of them.(3 books and practise books of them) And it's really helpfull. Or you may try: Practice Makes Perfect: Complete Spanish Grammar

For strictly reading purposes I have been reading Easy Spanish Reader by William T. Tardy. I find it to be simple enough to understand and when there are words I don't know they are usually defined in the margin.

If you are looking for a textbook type of book then I would recommend, ¿Cómo se Dice ...? by Jarvis, Lebredo, Mena-Ayllón. Mine is the 5th edition but I figure most editions are the same and I find it to be fairly helpful. It has some self tests with answers in the back which is always nice.

Hola: Also besides a book, here are two good programs that you can install on your computer:

The Oxford Spanish-English Dictionary. It is the computer CD version of the GIGANTIC Oxford Spanish Dictionary. The book probably weighs 10 pounds!

Oxford Spanish-English Dictionary

Also, Word Magic. They have several editions. I use the 'Professional Edition', but they have others. It gives you all the information you could possibly want for references to anything related to the Spanish language. They also have other editions. You could call them for more details. Here is the link:

All of the Practice Makes Perfect workbooks are wonderful, especially the one on Spanish Verbs. I also buy versions of books that I am interested in in both English and Spanish so that I can read them easily side by side. The same thing can be accomplished with a Nook or Kindle if you put in the Spanish/English dictionary app. You just put the cursor on the word you don't know and you'll immediately get the translation.

The most effective way for me is to buy both english and spanish versions (sometimes you can find dual text) and then get the audiobook in Spanish. That way you can listen to the book as read by a native speaker, and if you have a question you can reference the book. I started out with "The Little Prince". (El Principito)
