That sentence doesn't make any sense in Spanish.

"Cada año mi familia va a nuestra isla" (Because they go each year)

Honestly, I do not think you should use Preterit in this case but Present Tense.

Cada año mi familia va a nuestra isla privada

I hope someone more advance comments.
