I know it means rug, but if you are trying to say carpeting (as in wall to wall) would you use it too? or is there a better word for wall to wall carpeting?

Alfombra is fine, but when is a wall to wall carpeting, it's common to say "el alfombrado".

In Spain there is a clear distinction between a carpet or rug, which is called an 'alfombra', and a wall to wall carpet which is called a 'moqueta'. Carpeted floors are called 'suelos enmoquetados'.
