Odio levantar las pesas. I believe it is odio + the infinative of the verb.

"I hate lifting weights" = Odio levantando pesas.

"levantando" is the gerundio of "levantar". gerundios are not gerunds (i.e. they cannot be used as nouns [which is an essential part of the definition of "gerund"]). In Spanish the only verbal form that can function as a noun is the infinitive.

There may be other verbs that could be used for the meaning but they would still be in the infinitive. Either KenWilliams' or NeoBarba's replies are "acceptable". Please un-accept Moe's reply and choose another.

Surely when you are talking about the action of lifting weights you use "levantado". Please note I am not a native Spanish speaker but English is my first language.

I have deleted my own reply because it was incorrect. I cannot cancel the early acceptance of my wrong answer, only AeryFaery can do that. I offer my apology for misleading the questioner early in the thread/question.

No!!! "levantando" cannot be used as a noun. It must be "levantar". - samdie, Dec 10, 2010

Me choca levantar pesas.

@Moe: That's English interference right there. (Well, technically it's not considering saying 'I hate lifting weights' is an incorrect sentence in English, too.)

You HAVE to use the infinitive when you're talking about the general action of a verb.

If you are talking in general you can say:"Odio levantar pesas"...But if you are talking about a particular set of weights, then you say: "Odio levantar las pesas".
