I´d rather prefer celebrating his birthday
Everyone has their own sense of the heroic. Certainly, John Lennon walked away from one of the most lucrative careers in the music business to stand for his beliefs. He married the woman he loved in the face of of anger and derision from many. He used his considerable fame to focus attention on the importance of world peace. I believe it's safe to say, he was and is, a hero to many.
I can't choose between "Imagine" and "In My Life". Both are fantastic songs.

He was a talented man. Not much else. His fame made him a martyr. If he was not killed, he would have been an forgetable person like the rest of us.

When you also include all the ones that were written with McCartney there are just too many quality songs to pick a favorite. This music was like the soundtrack to my childhood.
