In English, we can say, "I count" to mean both numerical counting (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ...) as well as stating "I matter" or "I am important enough to be considered." Does this apply to Spanish as well? Can "yo cuento" be used both ways?

The word contar could be used as ''counting numbers'' or ''telling, often news or a story''. now to answer your question, yo cuento does not mean i count, as in i matter, rather i count sth, e.g. numbers, eggs... The interesting part is that contar con means to reckon with. saludos

Thank you for giving me an answer I can use. It is both informative and answers my question. Nice job. - SiempreAprendo, Dec 9, 2010

If you say to a friend, "Cuenta conmigo", you are saying "count/rely on me"

It can also mean to tell a story or update someone on what's been going on with you lately. When I talk to my boyfriend's mother, she often starts off the conversation with "Yo le cuento...", as she begins to tell me about her day.

Put 'contar' into 'translate' and see all the definitions.

Do you assume that I'm merely looking for answers to my homework? Your answer offers no assistance whatsoever. Isn't this a site for information for those who request help (as long as that request is truly not from a person seeking test answers)? - SiempreAprendo, Dec 9, 2010

The word count has more than two meanings, as does the word contar.

Your answer, while correct, does absolutely nothing to assist me with my question. Why did you bother to comment? - SiempreAprendo, Dec 9, 2010
