Via - the Spanish equivalent

Via - the Spanish equivalent

I thought that you could use 'a través de' as the equivalent of 'via' but perhaps I have that wrong;

What would you guys say is the most common way to translate

  • I went to London via India.

and how else could 'via' be translated depending on context?

Thanks as always for all help smile

Fui a Londres pasando por India

Viaje a Londres haciendo escala en India.

In some other cases, via could be translated as ´a través de´

I stay in touch via mail ---> me mantengo en contacto a través del correo electrónico.

However, I prefer por medio de or mediante in this last case.
