Ser is used to classify, define and identify (plus some specific uses that pose no problems). That's it! Nothing else. No need for the other "8 rules".

Welcome to the forum. This sounds like a homework question that really doesn't make sense in the real world. The only rule I know of is to read and listen a lot to proper Spanish and notice how people who know use it.

The verb "ser" means "to be". Unlike "estar", "ser" describes permanent/long-lasting qualities. For example: tall, short, big, small, fat, skinny, colors, descriptions of someone's natural personality, and many other would require the use of "ser" since they are permanent/long-lasting.

He is tall. El es alto.

The book is black. El libro es negro.

They are rude. Ellos son groseros.

We are smart. Nosotros somos inteligentes.

"Estar" is used for temporary conditions.

So "estar muerto" is a temporary condition? Should I use "N.Y es en América? After all, it is a pretty permanent location, isn't it? Don't use that pseudo-rule, please. - lazarus1907, Dec 6, 2010
