How would you say that something is based off of something else?
For example, I'm trying to say something along the lines of, "The musical is based off of a book."

I would say based on a book, and then I would translate it as :
El musical Drácula está basado en una novela del siglo XIX,
or El musical se basa en una novela.
From the articles that I looked at for
Based off [of] vs based on most say that based off [of] is incorrect or substandard English.
I could be way off base on this
, but from a logical standpoint, I would think it to be obvious that the correct preposition would be "on," especially considering the semantic meaning of the word/expression. That is to say that if a musical is based on another story, it implies that the newer work has been "built" upon the earlier work (i.e. the earlier work is the base or foundation upon which the newer work is built or rests).
Of course language being what it is, it does not surprise me much when I hear the "based off of..." (colloquial?) version thrown around.
That makes me wonder...does anyone ever says that this country was founded off of the principles of Democracy
