Would this be correct? "Las joyas mía son de plata, pero las joyas suya son de oro." or is it "Las joyas mía es de plata, pero las joyas suya son de oro." And what does the possessive adjective describe? The possession or the person? It's for my homework. Thanks in advance!

Well, we're not supposed to do homework problems for you, but you've made a good effort, so technically I'm just checking your answers.

Mío and suyo are adjectives that modify nouns. Adjectives always have to match the noun they're modifying. In this case joyas is the noun, plural and feminine, so the adjectives have to be plural and feminine, too.

Las joyas mías... Las joyas suyas.

las joyas mías...las joyas de mí

las joyas tuyas...las joyas de ti

las joyas suyas...las joyas de Ud./ella/él/ellos/ellas/Uds.

las joyas nuestras=las joyas de nosotr@s

las joyas vuestras=las joyas de vosotr@s

"Las joyas que yo tengo son de plata, pero las joyas que tu tienes son de oro." or " Mis joyas son de plata, pero sus joyas son de oro." Use either phrase. The possessive adjective describes the possession. That's why it's called the possessive adj.

Welcome to the forum. You might want to double-check that. - KevinB, Dec 5, 2010
The possessive adjective is describing the jewels, not the person. - KevinB, Dec 5, 2010
Nice usage, but his question concerns long form possessive adjectives, not short form. - 0074b507, Dec 5, 2010
