singular or plural?

I know that "los pantalones" means "trousers" and it is always plural in English( we cannot say trouser) . In Spanish can we say "el pantalon" or is it always plural?

pantalón

I think that we have a few previous discussions on this if you care to search. If you look in the dictionary, however, you will find the word pantalón. It is usually used to refer to one pant (trouser) leg of a pair of pants.

los pantalones could refer to one or several pairs of pants.

pantalón R A E

pantalón....U. t. en pl. con el mismo significado que en sing.

[usado también en plural con el mismo significado que en singular]

As you say, many people call a single pair of pants 'unos pantalones', but just as many call it 'un pantalón', referring to the pair. The DRAE seems to back that up, as you just pasted above. - bill1111, Dec 4, 2010
