Why is it that the spanish alphabet has words in there like h=hache, j=jota, x=equis, and z=zeta. How can I make this stick to my brain. I have been working on this forever.

First Part

Why does the English alphabet have

Aitch for h

Zed for z (where I come from)

Jay for J

Second part, jusy keep repeating them over and over. Believe me they will eventually stick.

I've recently made a site which you might find useful.

www.learnspanishalphabet.net

It teaches the pronunciation of all the letters in the Spanish Alphabet, including variations.

As well, you'll find a link to a handy app for the iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad which also let's you practice recognizing these letters, with an enjoyable and effective quiz.

Hoping that you find these resources useful, Sean

When one looks up alphabets there are two possible results. One: the names of the letters (how one refers to the letter apart from any word in which it might occur). The other is a discussion of how the letter is usually (in simple cases, always) pronounced when it occurs in a word.

Thus, for example the second letter of the English alphabet is "named" "bee" and (towards the end of the alphabet we have the "double u"). I point of fact, the "b" is almost never represented by the sound "bee" when pronouncing a word and "w" (as part of a word) is, most certainly never pronounced "double u".

Your examples "h=hache, j=jota," etc. refer to the "names" of the letters (as letters in the alphabet) not to how they are pronounced in words.

well what I am having trouble with is spelling out the word. I can say the alphabet, but when it comes to a test , and lets say the word has a z in there. I can't hear or even know that the z sound is there. - little_anna, Dec 3, 2010

Why is it that the spanish alphabet has words in there like....

Why is it in English that we pronounce the vowel "a" in many different ways instead of just one, like they do in Spanish?
