Ouch.. this is a very particular, seldom used word in Spanish.. I smell trouble ahead :) - bill1111, Dec 2, 2010
puffff, una palabra que no usamos nunca...eso no va con casi nada - 00494d19, Dec 2, 2010
Oh! Yeah, it's a very difficult word. In any case, the sentece would be "tengo querencia hacia los perros" - cogumela, Dec 2, 2010
Hopefully we'll have tomorrow an easier word.... :) - cogumela, Dec 2, 2010

Es su querencia la que hace que un perro siempre vuelva a su dueño.

It's his affection that makes a dog always return to his owner.

Dios da a cada pájaro su gusano, pero Dios tampoco lo echa en su querencia.

( God gives every bird his worm, but God also does not put it into the lair. )

Please correct my mistakes..

I really don't see 'querencia' here, or 'lair' instead of nest. Also, 'pero tampoco lo echa en su nido' - bill1111, Dec 2, 2010
Thanks Bill! - sv2qp, Dec 2, 2010
It sounds really odd to me "echar en su nido" . I'd say "no lo pone en su nido" or " no lo deja en su nido" - cogumela, Dec 2, 2010
Unfortunately "nido" is not the word of the day. I don't know how to remove the post.. :(( - sv2qp, Dec 2, 2010
Sakis I was not sure if you meant to use Lair so I said nothing. You could say that a nest is the "Home" of a bird. Click the Edit and change it. - ray76, Dec 2, 2010

La querencia de Lassie la ayudó a volver al lugar donde se sentía más en casa, en brazos de Tommy.

Lassie's homing instinct helped her to come back to where she felt most at home, in Tommy's arms.

This word does not sound natural at all in this sentence. Your sentence is right, but I'd reccomend to use the word 'instinto' here - cogumela, Dec 2, 2010

Todo el mundo piensa que las mujeres tienen querencia, pero los hombres la tienen también.

Everyone thinks of women having a homing instinct, but men have them, too.

'piensa que las mujeres..', 'los hombres también la tienen' ('la tienen también' would be ok too, but a tad more colloquial) - bill1111, Dec 2, 2010
Tienen querencia, without the article. Hi Echo! - cogumela, Dec 2, 2010
Thanks Bill and cogu for the corrections! By the way, that's not my husband....but he did suggest this picture when he heard the word of the day :-) - Echoline, Dec 2, 2010

I'm not sure if I've used "querencia" correctly here - please correct me if it's wrong. Thank you :) - amy_moreno, Dec 2, 2010
Yes, it's fine here imo. In any case, if you use the verb 'vivir', which is a verb that doesn't suggest a transit, it's better to say 'en muchas ciudades'. 'Por muchas ciudades' is more appropriate when you use verbs like 'viajar', 'pasar', etc.. - bill1111, Dec 2, 2010
Thanks, billstpor - you're right :) - amy_moreno, Dec 3, 2010

Muchos expertos piensan que la querencia de las aves se basa, en parte, en la orientación magnética.

Many experts think that the homing instinct of birds is based, in part, on magnetic orientation.
