4. No cheating on school assignments.
These forums do not provide free schoolwork, translations, or revisions of texts. You may submit your attempt at an assignment and members have the opportunity to correct it, but no one will do your assignment for you.

I infer from this that we shouldn't aid and abet those who ask homework questions. I know everyone here wants to be helpful, but answering these questions is not helpful in the long run. It deprives the person of the opportunity to learn. If a person could learn just by someone telling them something homework wouldn't be necessary in the first place. The teacher could just stand in the front of the class and lecture and all the students would remember every word forever. It doesn't work that way. Please bear in mind that every time you do someone's homework for them you are preventing them from learning Spanish.

I see no issue. I think the way that experienced Forum members handle the requests to do homework is usually good enough. If the questioner gives up rather than provide his or her own answer, and someone else still thinks it's an interesting question, then that someone is perfectly free to take up the question and pursue it in the appropriate manner.

My Spanish teacher gives me homework all the time-- But since that is me I get to decide if I do it. The main issue being that my wife always wants wants me to do something else (that she considers more important).

I really do try not to do anyone's homework- but I do think if it is clearly not homework then it is fair to be a little more generous with it- I still try to show the person how they can get their own answers the next time.

Please keep in mind that a number of users of this site are probably like me- reading the questions and answers in hopes of learning from them. I am sometimes disappointed when a question I would like to see an answer to goes nowhere because the poster gives up.

I think with the translator, sometimes we are too quick to send people to it when it is going to be wrong:

Look at my answer in this thread and let me know if that is an appropriate way to handle a homework question.

I always run it through the translator before I suggest it. I once ran "The weather is beautiful" through the translator, then ran the answer back through the other way. It came out "Time is tuna". - KevinB, Dec 1, 2010
