Alumnos shares the root with alumni and estudiantes with students. Otherwise, they are pretty much the same, I'd say. They are synonyms.

Alumno,pupil. Estudiante, who attends university colloge, etc. Los maestros enseñan a sus alumnos, los estudiantes aprenden de sus maestros.
