Wikipedia English numerals

About 2/3 down in the above site is the section on dates. From that for 2001:

Most common pronunciation:

Two thousand (and) one

Alternatives:

Twenty oh-one

Twenty hundred (and) one

Two double-oh-one

Two oh-oh-one

When written out I have never seen anything but the one listed as most common- I think the other forms are alternatives in spoken English only, although I am not absolutely sure of that.

For 2000, two thousand.

For 2001 to 2009, it's two thousand (and) one, two thousand (and) two, etc. (The "and" is technically incorrect, but it is almost always said with the "and" but is usually written without it).

For 2010 to 2099, you have a choice. You can say, "two thousand (and) ten" or "twenty-ten."

In the year twenty-twelve, every one will have a personal jet-pack.

In the year two thousand and fifteen, Swahili will replace English as the lengua franca.

And, most frequently, we write the actual numerals (2011) and not the words, regardless of how we would say it. - webdunce, Nov 30, 2010
I still remember that my sixth grade math teacher´s pet peeve was using the word "and" when saying numbers. - 008f2974, Nov 30, 2010
