What is the difference between "querido" and "tesoro"?

The Mexican man that I am tutoring says his 13-year-old son, who speaks English told him that "tesoro" means "darling," which I understand is one meaning. So when would "tesoro" be used instead of "querido"?

. That word is an influence of the TV show El Chavo del 8 where a character was always called "Tesoro" by his mom.

I didn't realize that it's popularity originated with El Chavo but "tesoro" technically means "treasure" and I've always figured that it can be used interchangeably with other terms of affection like "querido". It's like asking when we would say "honey" instead of "sweetie" or "darling".
