Hahahaha! That's a good one! The verb "to get" has at least 81 meanings, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, ie. it means pretty much almost anything. The probability that another language has a verb that matches all those meanings is... how to say it? Using a well known comparison, the probability that "to get" has a perfect counterpart in another language is lower than the probability of a hurricane blowing tons of metal scrap and building an airplane by accident.

I once tried to compile a list of all the verbs that would be required to translate "to get" into Spanish. After 40 verbs or so I got tired and I deleted the list. Waste of time.

Yesterday I saw a number of Spanish speakers use CONSEGUIR as get in the context of to get a good job.

transitive verb 1. to obtain, to get (obtener) ; to achieve (un objetivo) consiguió todo lo que se propuso -> she achieved everything she set out to do conseguir hacer algo -> to manage to do something no consiguió que me enfadara -> she didn't (manage to) get me annoyed

Just think about how we use "get" in English. To get=to obtain. To get it=to understand. To get lost=to go away. To get away=to move away from something or go on vacation. Those are just a few examples. Look it up in the dictionary on here and you will find a very good explaination.

Welcome to the forum. The dictionary here is quite good for individual words like this.

As a warning, the Spanish verb coger will be listed as one of the synonyms for "to get". In many areas it also means something very, very rude, and it is avoided in most places outside of Spain.

Actually, No. It can be a lot of different words. There is not a single Spanish verb that covers all, or even the majority of meanings of get. Recibir, conseguir, ponerse, hacerse, obtener, maybe adquirir. Llegar is possible, but not high on the list. - rogspax, Sep 30, 2013
