"papas fritas"
How do you say "French Fries"?

Maybe it is time we fight back:
The name of this tuber comes from Quechua "papa", and that is how it was originally introduced in Spanish. Maybe because it reminded people of other things, or because "batata" was close, it eventually changed into "patata" in some parts, and eventually spread to other places. In the south of Spain many people still say "papa"even though they are stigmatised (I'm not of them).
The word "papa" for potato is not just acceptable, but the original one. In any case, check the DRAE:
papa
(Del quechua papa).
f. patata (? planta solanácea).
f. patata (? tubérculo).

The word papas is often used in some countries for patatas, in Spain only patatas.

Emiliano Papa

Patatas fritas = Potatoe crisps or fried potatoe chips context would differenciate between the two.
I've always heard papas fritas. You'll sometimes hear papitas in southern California, but you also hear lonche. It's not the official name for french fries.
